Summer Solstice & International Yoga Day

Summer Solstice & International Yoga Day

Celebrate the longest day of the year on International Yoga Day with 108 Salutations to the Sun! Yoga Moves teachers will guide you seamlessly through the magical number of 108 salutations. Be amazed at the power of flow when you drop your mind and allow deep repetition to take over.

Come ready to do 108 salutations to the sun!

Why 108 Sun Salutations?

In Hindu culture, 108 is a sacred number with various symbolic meanings. For example, there are 108 Upanishads (Hindu spiritual texts), 108 names for Hindu deities, 108 marma points (sacred points) on the body, and 108 sacred sites in India known as pitha’s. Interestingly, the distance between the sun and the earth is also 108 times the sun's diameter.

By practicing 108 Sun Salutations during times of natural transition, such as the solstice or equinox, yogis can experience a meditative practice that connects their body, mind, and the universe. This practice brings a sense of renewal, inspiration, and freshness, allowing yogis to begin anew. One set of Sun Salutations alone can balance emotions and stimulate cerebral activity with solar energy, but the number 108 holds a special significance in the Yogic tradition.

How does it look like?

108 Sun Salutations seems impossible. No worries, it’s not!

You can see it as a nice long yoga class. The class starts with an opening and short context about why we do this. We bring in our intention and then we’ll chant together. We will have 9 rounds of 12 simple Sun Salutations A, modifications encouraged, no pressure but also encouragement. In between these rounds there are 3-5 min pauses with readings and savasanas. We will end with a section of integration and counter poses.

Bring your water bottle to hydrate throughout your practice and don’t forget to move with an intention.

Are you pregnant? We advise you to not join.
