There’s So Much More to Vinyasa Than You Think
By SIMON ROWE
Vinyasa yoga is well known for its dynamic, creative, and energetic flows that get your heart pumping and your body glowing.
It can be an amazing workout — but that’s just the surface.
Dive a little deeper, and you’ll discover that Vinyasa is yoga for adventurous souls who want to awaken their fullest human potential through full-bodied presence, energy, and deep soulful connection. The word vinyasa translates to “doing the right thing, in the right place, at the right time.” This wisdom is rooted in the ancient yogis’ understanding that the cycles of nature are intelligent — the seasons, moon phases, and elemental forces all hold deep teachings. Vinyasa yoga is a system for tuning ourselves to that organic rhythm, a path of embodied awakening for modern mystics.
Vinyasa in essence is the yogic art of living in flow — in harmony with yourself, with others, and with the rhythms of the Earth. A well-trained teacher doesn’t just string poses together for fun — they craft sequences with intention, using the science of krama (intelligent progression), where every posture prepares the body for the next. It’s art, science, and magic all rolled into one.
But it doesn’t stop there.
True Vinyasa dives into energetic anatomy — awakening the life force, or prana, that pulses through your body. Through breath, movement, and awareness, the practice releases stress and stuck-ness, gets energy moving, rejuvenates the body and clears the mind. Skilled vinyasa teachers can weave sequences around the five elements, the seven chakras, or the balancing of solar (active) and lunar (receptive) energies — offering fiery, activating flows or grounding, nourishing practices depending on the season, the cycle, or the moment.
Most importantly, Vinyasa invites you to feel. It’s a deeply somatic practice — not just a workout, but a work-in. It guides you to explore yourself from the inside out, through sensation, breath, and presence. In this way, Vinyasa becomes meditation in motion — alive, pulsing, sensual. Never dry. Never rigid. The path is alive, and it’s calling.
Join me and let’s explore the depths of Vinyasa, one breath at a time. I offer three levels of Vinyasa each week at YogaMoves in Utrecht:
