When you want something you don't think you can or should have
Written by Hilary Brown - founder of Yoga Moves, November 2022
It is human to want, to have dreams, to imagine ourselves in another life, or a better life. We all do, and it can be healthy. To desire is what motivates us to love harder, work harder, give more. Our desires create babies, hospitals, art, great food, jobs...the list is endless.
What do we do with that impulse to better ourselves? And to give to others? And what if our desire would give us both?
This story I'm about to tell is unfortunately common:
Usually a woman approaches me, she loves her yoga practice, it has "given her, her life back" in many ways (body feels good again, less stress, more joy) and she is also a bit...bored or worse: frustrated in her current job outlook. In addition, she wants more in life. She is one of the millions of women who are fed up with accepting life in a box...go to work, come home, pay the bills, take a holiday and repeat. She wants more. She wants to give to others what she has also received: The gift of yoga.
She comes and confides her fears:
"I am not sure I am "good enough" to ever be a yoga teacher".
Would I (ever) be able to (really) be good enough/ confident enough/ strong enough / thin enough / flexible enough / knowledgeable enough to pull that off?
I have sat with many people who basically let me know they are unsure.
The trouble with this question is not that we have fears or concerns. It’s that we doubt the process of becoming something. We forget that learning is a process. We are not the same person at the end of the journey. We grow, we learn. And yes, we struggle. But it’s the process itself that makes us good at something... at all things.
A few days ago, I taught an Introduction to Yoga workshop. After class a young woman approached me to ask about what class she should go to. She was concerned that her learning process was too slow, her ability to "get it" took her time and she doubted herself.
I reminder her: this is a process. To start, you need to just start, show up, repeat, repeat again and again. Explore and enjoy finding out what classes you love, what style you love. Be willing to be a beginner again. To not know it all.
She started to smile and let me know she knows she is hard on herself, which is one of the reasons she is coming to yoga. We had a hug of recognition.
And so, the yoga begins: In her life, mind, and body.
It can start for you too...you, who are considering: Can I learn how to share yoga to my friends, colleagues, or maybe professionally?
Yes, you can learn how to teach yoga.
We will help you:
Stand up. Take center. Breath in and out. And give your gift.
One step at a time.
But don't expect to be at the end of the journey when you start. Become empty and open to learning new things and more that you ever expected about this beautiful practice of heart, body and soul we call “yoga”.
