About Birthlight

Birthlight has been a pioneer course provider in Yoga for Pregnancy and Birth in the UK and internationally since the 1990’s. Birthlight offers original adaptations of classic yoga practices for women from pre-conception through to nine months after childbirth. Yoga Moves is the Birthlight Partner for trainings in Holland.

Birthlight’s approach strives to enable women to give birth with minimal intervention but we acknowledge that this may not be possible for all women. What we value most is the physical and emotional nurturing of pregnant women so that they can approach labour and birth with calm confidence, energised from a vibrant core strength and with full use of their breathing capacity.

Baby Yoga

When we care for parent and child together and support positive interaction, we harmonise relationships at all stages through relaxation, awareness of breathing,  acknowledgement of emotions and positive responses to stress. Baby yoga and massage are not only beneficial for babies, but are but also enjoyable for the adults involved, particularly for new mothers.

Baby yoga helps to attune to your baby’s needs and to calm or stimulate them as appropriate with a sense of security and well-being. It is beneficial for all babies, you don’t need to practice yoga or even know anything about yoga to get started with your baby. From birth babies respond positively to the stimulation of movement and touch together.

Baby Yoga includes a wide range of different practices that can be combined to suit the needs of each baby or toddler through their individual development:

  • Gentle body strokes
  • Yoga moves adapted to babies (mini twists, mini stretches, upper and lower body movements, diagonal movements). These moves have been transmitted though generations in India for at least 2000 years
  • A blend of postnatal yoga and baby yoga for new mothers
  • Playful moves with rhymes
  • Joint parent/baby relaxation (walking relaxation, instant relaxation, relaxation to sleep, feeding relaxation)
  • Transitional practices (head control, sitting, crawling, standing, early steps, first jumps and balances)

Moms, dads, and sometimes grandmothers and other familiar carers authorised by parents can take this course.

Learn therapeutic applications of yoga to women’s reproductive health.

With Françoise Freedman

Well Woman yoga complements any pregnancy yoga program you already offer. These classes will address the needs of women that cannot be met fully in general classes.

Practices taught on the course carefully integrate the work of Eastern and Western healers and teachers, with references to classic yoga texts. Recent developments in somatic healing movement and yoga therapy are included. Some of the practices taught on this course are part of the Amazonian shamanic tradition.

This course focus is on therapeutic applications of yoga to women’s reproductive health. You will learn to work with women who are experiencing discomforts that are not so serious to warrant medical treatment, but may compromise a women’s quality of life. These issues can be effectively addressed with a yoga therapy approach, including often optimising pelvic tone, exploring psychological or mental roots of conditions and teaching deep relaxation.

This diploma course is taught in 2 parts: Part 1 is the Foundation Course and Part 2 completes the Diploma.

Who is this training course for?

  • Yoga therapists
  • Yoga teachers who hold a prenatal/ postnatal teaching qualification
  • Other therapists working in the areas of women’s health but who do not hold a yoga qualification can apply individually

This course is offered once a year and consists of 2 parts.
