The Joy of Back bending

With Marilou van Hoek

Free up your spine!

Many of us find Back bending challenging both physically and mentally. However, despite its discomforts, back bending can be one of the most therapeutic parts of a yoga practice.

In this workshop, we will take the time to open and create space in the hips and shoulders. We will also lengthen the front of the body and strengthen the back to be able to free up and support the spine in a safe way.

After we have prepared the body and mind for back bending, we will explore and experience deepening our back bends through dropping back. Towards the end of the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga, we learn to move backward from a standing position to land in Urdhva Dhanurasana and come back up to a standing position. We will do this with the help of the teacher and/ or partner. It will be fun to play with it!

There are many benefits of back bending: it is uplifting and energising, realigns the spine, relieves back pain, stimulates digestive and eliminating processes, allows to open the heart chakra, helps to break through insecurity and fear, relieves stress and builds confidence as well as self esteem.
