The Breath Connection | Pranayama Training

With Doug Keller

Connecting to the Power of the Breath in Yoga

Breathing seems simple—you breathe in and you breathe out. But over the years most of us have developed patterns in our breathing without being aware of it. Big and small events in our lives, have left their mark in our breath as we use artificial strategies to deal with them. This leaves many of us with limited, or even unhealthy breathing patterns.

Yogic breathing is an essential practice of hatha yoga that not only brings relaxation, clarity, focus and renewed energy; it is the doorway from asana (the practice of yoga postures) into meditation. This training takes you step-by-step into the yoga of the breath. It is ideal for both yoga students and yoga teachers, as it delves into principles of posture and the many forms of pranayama in an accessible way. It covers the practical details, benefits and purpose for doing pranayama, as well as the subtler energetics of the prana and its relationship to spiritual progress.

In this full day pranayama training you will learn simple, straightforward and clear pranayama techniques as described in Doug’s book “Refining the Breath.

  • Anatomy of healthy breathing and why diaphragmatic breathing is a lot more than just ‘belly breathing.’
  • The most common patterns of unhealthy breathing and how to observe these in yourself and students
  • Why ‘control of breath’ is a misleading translation of the word ‘pranayama’ and why efforting and control will never lead to the desired shift in breathing patterns
  • How to bypass the emotional holdings that are often part of restricted breathing patterns and help students free the breath in a natural way
  • Simple introductory Pranayama practices that also induces natural, healthy breathing
  • Practices for developing greater awareness of the breath and tuning in to the inner feeling of the breath
  • How to learn to tune in to and participate in the natural flow of Prana in the body.
